Here are just a selection of the new wines for March.

A couple of sparkling choices….

Arras Blanc de Blancs Tasmanian Sparkling wine

Arras is Australia’s leading sparkling wine producers and this is one of their excellent wines. It is 100% Chardonnay made using the same method as the Champagnes of the famed Côtes des Blancs. It is fresh, medium and elegantly bodied. And a satisfying mouthful of creamy, citrus complexity. You don’t need food for this one! £25 – £35 price range. (tasted and given the thumbs up at CHAT & Wine March)

Celene Royal Cuvee Rosé Cremant de Bordeaux

This is a sparkling rosé from Bordeaux made from two of the region’s star grapes, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. It is fruity and fresh, with plenty of berry fruit and spice. An unusual choice that goes very well with a range of food. Fish, chicken, hams and salads. £15 – £20 price range. (tasted and given the thumbs up at Winemusing Session – February)

A handful of white wines ….

Gomez Cruzado Rioja Blanco 2o Ano

This is a silky, slinky white blend from Rioja in Spain. It is the type of wine that delivers some floral, stonefruit and citrus character in your glass. Another wine that you don’t need to eat anything with, but if you are after a wine to enjoy with grilled scallops, chicken and tapas such as patatas bravas.  £15 – £20 price range. (tasted and given the thumbs up at Winemusing Session – January)

Soumah Savarro

Savagnin has a very interesting history in Australia, however, the iconic Jura grape really has found a home there. Soumah has handled this grape so well in the Savarro. The result is this vibrant, zesty and intense dry white wine that has some delightful spiciness as well. Enjoy with baked fish with butter and flaked almonds, or just your local fish and chips. Calamari is a good option.  £20 – £25 price range. (tasted and given the thumbs up at CHAT & Wine March)

Chateau de Piote Cuvee des Chefs Bordeaux Blanc Sec

A typical white blend from Bordeaux, featuring Colombard and Semillon. The Colombard has interestingly spent some time in a ceramic amphora to add complexity. While the Semillon has matured in very old oak, which perhaps adds a more texture than flavour. Enjoy this with roast chicken or turkey. It can certainly handle baked potatoes too. Or an onion tart. Easter dinner, anyone?  Will this be your pick of the new wines for March? £20 – £25 price range. Biodynamic. (tasted and given the thumbs up at Winemusing Session – February)

Read ‘Organic vs biodynamic! What it all means?’ for more information.

One for those curious about ‘natural’ wines…

Italian Plastic Blush

This is a rose wine made from Pinot Gris, if the grapes were a paler colour, it would be called an ‘amber’ or ‘orange’ wine. It is inspired by the ramato style of Pinot Grigio of Italy, but is all Australian. The colour comes from undergoing an extended fermentation in contact with the grape’s skins. This is something that is not usually done with white wines. But here it has added concentration and smoothness to the wine. It is a peachy fruity wine. It is a wine that needs some food, particularly charcuterie and cheese!  £20 – £25 price range. (tasted and given the thumbs up at CHAT & Wine February)
